NEWS FROM THE BREWERY

We are very proud to announce the arrival of another round of firkins from the UK, with the first one being tapped today! This time we've got seven casks (from three different breweries) visiting our cellar from across the pond. Some are strong, some are delicate, all are very classic expressions of English brewing.

We start this journey with a virtual visit to the Wye Valley Brewery in Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire, beginning with their Hereford Pale Ale. We'll also get to try their Victory Ale and Winter Tipple before moving on to the beers of the Burton Bridge Brewery of Burton-on-Trent, one of the world's most historically important brewing cities. Burton Bridge celebrates that city's rich brewing heritage with authentic, traditional ales such as Festival Ale, Bramble Stout, and Thomas Sykes Old Ale, all of which will be on tap soon at Magnolia (one or two at a time 'til we get through them all).

Following these, the seventh firkin is a very special treat: one of the final casks of the legendary George Gales Prize Old Ale, bringing 158 years of brewing at the George Gales Brewery in Horndean, Hampshire to a close. Gales was recently bought by Fullers Brewery and production of the Gales line will be moved there shortly. So come in and get a taste of this end of an era.

Happy as we are to have these beers in the house, we can't let our English colleagues have all the brewing fun. Like most California craft breweries, we love our hops, but we also love to revisit our roots. Latest in an ongoing series of traditionally minded English bitters, we're pleased to release New Speedway Bitter today, in both cask and CO2 dispense. This copper-colored 3.6% ABV bitter features Golden Promise, crystal and wheat malts from the UK as well as touch of sugar, as is the norm with many English bitters. Hops are of the First Gold and East Kent Golding varieties, and our house English ale yeast seals the deal with a touch of fruitiness that comes out best in the cask version.

And finally, on Friday we will serve the first glass of the long-anticipated Tweezer Tripel aged in a York Creek cabernet barrel for nearly 3 months. It's still unabashedly Tweezer, but with some nice, soft, subtle notes from the wood. We are excited about it and look forward to having you all try it. Let us know what you think!

Winter Warmer, Gales, Poor Richard

The cask Winter Warmer should be available now. I'll be along one day this week to give it a try.

Also, Magnolia has two firkins of George Gale's Christmas Ale from England. This brewery has just been bought by Fuller's, so there's much uncertainty about its future. I'm hoping the Gale's will be on handpump this week too.

And finally, to celebrate Benjamin Franklin's 300th Birthday a whole slew of American brewers are making Poor Richard's Ale to the same recipe. Magnolia's goes on tap on January 9 in time for the January 17th anniversary.

Haight Street Fair = Jubilee Pale Ale!

With the 28th annual Haight Street Fair coming up a week from Sunday (June 12th), it's time to get excited about the 2005 Jubilee Pale Ale. This pale copper-colored, 5.2% ale strikes the perfect balance between biscuity, English, Maris Otter malt flavor and fragrant, floral, Washington state hop character. In addition to the tap version, we have several casks conditioning for service on the beer engines. We'll begin serving it both ways on Sunday morning, June 12th, when we open at 10. And, to celebrate the fair, we will
be selling pints of Jubilee Pale Ale for $3.50 all day, that day only. Come
by for brunch before the fair, dinner after, or stop in anytime throughout the day for a pint of 2005 Jubilee. We hope to see you in here or out on the street.

Strong Beer Month Offerings

I was wondering if anyone else felt that Magnolia's beers were lacking this year? I felt that compared to 21st Amendment they fell a little flat. I did a comparison and I must say they were not as good as years passed.

harvest ale

A green hop harvest ale went on tap Monday (a name is pending). This special beer was brewed with Cascade and Centennial hops that were still growing in the field in Yakima, WA the day before they went in the beer. They were picked, shipped overnight, and went directly into a boiling kettle of 100% Maris Otter wort. Hops don't get any fresher!

Spooky Tooth Stout

Surprised to see this still on tap. A fine body and head, but, a bit bitter for a stout to my taste. This comming from someone who will pilgrimage for a Welsh Bitters or a Death and Taxes.

Thanks for starting this tribe. I was going to but you did it so right on. I started a tribe for Buffalo Bill's if you are interested. They make Alimony Ale which is arguably the most bitter ale around.
